One mole of an ideal monoatomic gas is compressed isothermally in a rigid vessel to double its pressure at room temperature, 27°C. The work done on the gas will be

Answer: (2) 300R ln 2

Step-by-step solution

Isothermal compression at T=300 K with the pressure doubled, so the volume

halves.

Wₒₙ=nRT ln (P₂)/(P₁)=1× R×300×ln 2=300R ln 2.

The stem says "in a rigid vessel", which would forbid any volume change at all;

the calculation the options expect is the ordinary isothermal one.
