Practice portal › Thermodynamics › Identifying a Process from its Graph

Two thermodynamic processes are shown in the figure. The molar heat capacities for process A and process B are C_A and C_B. The molar heat capacities at constant pressure and at constant volume are Cₚ and C_V respectively. Choose the correct statement.

Figure: Reading and Translating P-V Diagrams
Answer: (1) C_A=0 and C_B=∞

Step-by-step solution

Read the two processes off the figure by their molar heat capacity

C=Q/(nΔ T).

Process A carries no heat with a temperature change, so C_A=0: it is adiabatic.

Process B changes temperature not at all while heat flows, so C_B=∞: it is

isothermal.

Options (a) and (d) are the same statement written in the two possible orders, and

the book prints both as correct. Listed in DEFECTS.md.

Why the other options are wrong
