Three identical coils C₁, C₂ and C₃ are closely placed such that they share a common axis. C₂ is exactly midway. C₁ carries current I in anti-clockwise direction while C₃ carries current I in clockwise direction. An induced current flows through C₂ will be in clockwise direction when

Asked in JEE Main 22nd Jan 1st Shift 2026 · Direction of the induced current

Answer: (1) C₁ moves towards C₂ and C₃ moves away from C₂

Step-by-step solution

For a clockwise current in C₂, the flux through it from the two neighbours must be falling in the sense C₁ produces.

C₁ approaching increases its (anticlockwise) contribution, and C₃ receding decreases its opposing clockwise one.

Both changes push C₂ the same way, so the answer is C₁ towards and C₃ away.
