A point like object is placed at a distance of 1 m in front of a convex lens of focal length 0.5 m. A plane mirror is placed at a distance of 2 m behind the lens. The position and nature of the final image formed by the system is

Asked in JEE Main 6th Sept 1st Shift 2020 · Combinations and silvered lenses

Answer: (1) 2.6 m from the mirror, real

Step-by-step solution

Lens: u=-1, f=0.5: 1/v=2-1=1, v=1 m, which is 1 m in front of the mirror.

Plane mirror: image 1 m behind the mirror, i.e. 3 m from the lens.

Reflected light returns through the lens: u=-3: 1/v=2-1/3=5/3, v=0.6 m on the object side.

Distance from the mirror =2+0.6=2.6 m; rays actually converge there, so it is real.
