A ray of light is incident at an angle of incidence 60° on the glass slab of refractive index √3. After refraction, the light ray emerges out from other parallel faces and lateral shift between incident ray and emergent ray is 4√3 cm. The thickness of the glass slab is ______ cm.

Asked in JEE Main 24th June 2nd Shift 2022 · Snell's law, slabs and apparent depth

Answer: 12

Step-by-step solution

sin r = (sin 60°)/(√3) = 1/2, r = 30°.

Shift = (t sin(i-r))/(cos r) = (t sin 30°)/(cos 30°) = t/(√3).

t/(√3) = 4√3, so t = 12 cm.

→ 12
