A container contains a liquid with refractive index of 1.2 up to a height of 60 cm and another liquid having refractive index 1.6 is added to height H above first liquid. If viewed from above, the apparent shift in the position of bottom of container is 40 cm. The value of H is ______ cm. (Consider liquids are immiscible)

Asked in JEE Main 7th April 1st Shift 2025 · Snell's law, slabs and apparent depth

Answer: 80

Step-by-step solution

Shift = t₁(1-1/(μ₁))+t₂(1-1/(μ₂)).

60(1-1/(1.2)) = 10 cm.

H(1-1/(1.6)) = 0.375H.

10+0.375H = 40, so H = 80 cm.

→ 80
