A force of -P̂k acts on the origin of the coordinate system. The torque about the point (2, -3) is P(âi+b̂j). The ratio a/b is x/2. Find the value of x.

Answer: 3

Step-by-step solution

The vector ⃗r runs from the reference point to where the force acts.

Force applied at O=(0,0,0); reference point (2,-3,0).

⃗r=(0,0,0)-(2,-3,0)=(-2, 3, 0) and ⃗F=(0, 0, -P).

̂i component: (3)(-P)-(0)(0)=-3P.

̂j component: -[(-2)(-P)-(0)(0)]=-2P.

̂k component: (-2)(0)-(3)(0)=0.

τ⃗=P(-3̂i-2̂j), so a=-3 and b=-2.

a/b=(-3)/(-2)=3/2, and this is given as x/2.

x=3.
