Two wires as shown in the figure below are made of steel and have a breaking stress of 12×10⁸ N m⁻². The upper wire hangs from the ceiling and carries a 30 kg block; the lower wire hangs from that block and carries a 10 kg block, below which the pan is attached. The area of cross-section of the upper wire is 0.008 cm² and of the lower wire is 0.004 cm². The maximum mass that can be added to the pan without breaking any wire is ______ kg. (Take g=10 m s⁻²)

Figure: Breaking stress and maximum load
Answer: (2) 38

Step-by-step solution

Given: breaking stress σ=12×10⁸ N m⁻², A₁=0.008 cm²=8×10⁻⁷ m², A₂=0.004 cm²=4×10⁻⁷ m².

The lower wire carries the 10 kg block and the pan load m; the upper wire carries that plus the 30 kg block.

Lower wire, area A₂: σ A₂=12×10⁸×4×10⁻⁷=480 N, so 10+m≤48, giving m≤38 kg.

Upper wire, area A₁: σ A₁=960 N, so 30+10+m≤96, giving m≤56 kg.

The smaller limit decides, so the maximum added mass is 38 kg.
