Two parallel long current carrying wires separated by a distance 2r are shown in the figure. The ratio of magnetic field at A to the magnetic field produced at C is x/7. The value of x is ______.

Figure: Straight wire segments
Answer: 5

Step-by-step solution

A is r from wire I and 3r from wire 2I; C is r from wire 2I and 3r from wire I.

Both currents are in the same direction and both wires are on the same side of A (and of C), so the fields add.

B_A=(μ₀)/(2π r)(I+(2I)/3)=5/3·(μ₀ I)/(2π r), B_C=(μ₀)/(2π r)(2I+I/3)=7/3·(μ₀ I)/(2π r).

(B_A)/(B_C)=5/7

→ 5
