A system consists of two types of gas molecules A and B having the same number density 2 × 10²⁵/m³. The diameters of A and B are 10 Å and 5 Å respectively. They suffer collision at room temperature. The ratio of average distance covered by molecule A to that of B between two successive collisions is ______ x 10⁻².

Asked in JEE Main 25th July 2nd Shift 2021 · Mean free path during a process

Answer: 25

Step-by-step solution

λ=1/(√2 π nd²), and both gases share the same number density.

So λ∝1/(d²).

(λ_A)/(λ_B)=((d_B)/(d_A))²=(5/(10))².

=1/4=0.25=25×10⁻², so the value is 25.
