A particle starts from the origin at time t = 0 and moves along the positive x-axis. The graph of velocity with respect to time is shown in the figure. What is the position of the particle at time t = 5 s?

Figure: Slopes of motion graphs
Answer: (1) 9 m

Step-by-step solution

Position is the area under the v–t graph from 0 to 5 s.

0 to 2 s: velocity rises from 0 to 2 m/s, area 1/2×2×2 = 2 m.

2 to 4 s: flat at 2 m/s, area 2×2 = 4 m.

4 to 5 s: flat at 3 m/s, area 3×1 = 3 m.

x(5) = 2 + 4 + 3 = 9 m.
