Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.
Assertion A : The escape velocities of planet A and B are same, but A and B are of unequal masses.
Reason R : The product of their mass and radius must be same, M₁R₁=M₂R₂.

Answer: (1) A is correct but R is not correct.

Step-by-step solution

Escape speed depends only on the combination M/R, since vₑ=√(2GM)/R.

Two planets with different masses can still have equal vₑ if the bigger one is proportionately bigger in radius, so A is a possible situation.

Equal escape speeds give (M₁)/(R₁)=(M₂)/(R₂), that is M₁R₂=M₂R₁.

That is not M₁R₁=M₂R₂, so R is wrong while A is correct.
