Practice portal › Gravitation › Variation of g with Height and Depth

Given below are two statements.
Statement I: Acceleration due to gravity is different at different places on the surface of the earth.
Statement II: Acceleration due to gravity increases as we go down below the earth's surface.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Asked in JEE Main 1st Feb 2nd Shift 2023 · Variation with depth

Answer: (3) Statement I is true but Statement II is false.

Step-by-step solution

Surface g depends on latitude through g_λ=g-ω²R cos²λ and on the earth's slightly different polar and equatorial radii, so Statement I is true.

Below the surface only the mass inside radius R-d acts, giving g_d=g(1-d/R).

That expression falls steadily to zero at the centre, so g decreases with depth and Statement II is false.
