When one moves from a point 16 km below the earth's surface to a point 16 km above the earth's surface, the change in g is approximately α %. The value of α is ______ . Take the radius of the earth as 6400 km.

Asked in JEE Main 5th April 1st Shift 2026 · g from mass, radius and density

Answer: (2) 0.25

Step-by-step solution

Both points fall short of the surface value of g, so work out each shortfall and then compare them.

Below the surface g_d=g(1-d/R), and above it gₕ≈ g(1-(2h)/R) since h R.

The change between the two points is therefore (2h-d)/R of g, the depth term counting once and the height term twice.

With h=d=16 km and R=6400 km: (32-16)/(6400)=(16)/(6400)=0.0025.

That is 0.25 %, so α=0.25.
