Five persons P₁, P₂, P₃, P₄ and P₅ recorded object distance (u) and image distance (v) using same convex lens having power +5D as (25,96), (30,62), (35,37), (45,35) and (50,32) respectively. Identify the correct statement.

Asked in JEE Main 24th Jan 2nd Shift 2026 · Focal length on the optical bench

Answer: (2) Readings recorded by P₃ person are incorrect

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the lens has P=+5 D, so f=1/5 m=20 cm. Every pair must satisfy 1/u+1/v=1/f for a real object and a real image.

P₁(25,96): 1/(25)+1/(96)=0.05042, f=19.8.

P₂(30,62): 1/(30)+1/(62)=0.04946, f=20.2.

P₃(35,37): 1/(35)+1/(37)=0.05560, f=18.0.

P₄(45,35): 1/(45)+1/(35)=0.05079, f=19.7.

P₅(50,32): 1/(50)+1/(32)=0.05125, f=19.5.

Four of the five cluster about 20 cm; only P₃ is out, by two centimetres. For u=35 the image should be at v=1/(1/20-1/35)=46.7 cm, not 37.
