In an experiment to determine the resistance of a given wire using Ohm's law, the voltmeter and ammeter readings are noted as 10 V and 5 A, respectively. The least counts of voltmeter and ammeter are 500 mV and 200 mA, respectively. The estimated error in the resistance measurement is ______ Ω.

Asked in JEE Main 5th April 2nd Shift 2026 · Ohm's law: resistance and its error

Answer: (4) 0.18

Step-by-step solution

Given: V=10 V with Δ V=0.5 V; I=5 A with Δ I=0.2 A.

R=V/I=(10)/5=2 Ω.

(Δ R)/R=(Δ V)/V+(Δ I)/I=(0.5)/(10)+(0.2)/5=0.05+0.04=0.09.

Δ R=0.09×2=0.18 Ω.

The question asks for the error itself, not the fractional error, so the factor R must not be dropped.
