Practice portal › Electromagnetic Waves › Momentum, Radiation Pressure and Force on a Charge

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A): The electromagnetic wave exerts pressure on the surface on which they are allowed to fall. Reason (R): There is no mass associated with the electromagnetic waves. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Asked in JEE Main 5th April 2nd Shift 2026 · Momentum delivered: absorbed or reflected

Answer: (2) Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

Step-by-step solution

(A) is true: radiation carries momentum p = U/c, so absorbing or reflecting it delivers a force — the pressure is I/c (absorption) or 2I/c (reflection)

(R) is true: an electromagnetic wave (photon) has zero rest mass

But zero rest mass is not why the wave pushes — the pressure follows from the momentum it carries, and it exists in spite of the zero rest mass, not because of it, so (R) does not explain (A)

Why the other options are wrong
