The voltage across the 10 Ω resistor in the given circuit is x volt. The value of x to the nearest integer is ______. [Figure: a 170 V battery in series with a 10 Ω resistor and a parallel pair of 50 Ω and 20 Ω.]

Asked in JEE Main 18th March 1st Shift 2021 · Series and parallel combinations

Figure: Series and parallel combinations
Answer: 70

Step-by-step solution

50∥20=(1000)/(70)=(100)/7 Ω.

Total =10+(100)/7=(170)/7 Ω.

I=(170)/(170/7)=7 A.

Voltage across 10 Ω =7×10=70 V.

The printed key is 7, which is the current in amperes, but the physics gives x=70.

The question asks for the voltage across the 10 Ω resistor, so the answer is 70 V, not the 7 A of current.
