Unpolarised light falls on two polarisers placed one on top of the other. What must the angle between the characteristic directions (optic axes) of the polarisers be if the intensity of the transmitted light is one third of the intensity of the incident light?

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Malus's law and polaroids

Answer: (2) 35.3°

Step-by-step solution

Given: unpolarised light of intensity I₀ through two polaroids whose axes make an angle θ, with (I₀)/3 emerging.

Idea: the first polaroid halves unpolarised light, and Malus' law then governs the second, so I=(I₀)/2 cos²θ.

(I₀)/2 cos²θ=(I₀)/3.

cos²θ=2/3, so cos θ=0.8165.

θ=cos⁻¹0.8165.

θ=35.3°.
