The band gaps of a conductor, a semiconductor and an insulator are respectively E_g1, E_g2 and E_g3. The relationship between them can be given as ________.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2015 · Energy bands and band gap

Answer: (3) E_g1 < E_g2 < E_g3

Step-by-step solution

Idea: put the three in order of how much energy an electron needs to reach the conduction band.

Conductor: the valence and conduction bands overlap, so E_g1 is effectively zero and electrons are free at any temperature.

Semiconductor: a small gap, E_g2 ≈ 1 eV (1.1 eV for Si, 0.7 eV for Ge), which thermal energy can bridge for a small number of electrons.

Insulator: a large gap, E_g3 of several eV and about 6 eV in diamond, which thermal energy cannot bridge.

So the order is E_g1 < E_g2 < E_g3.

Why the other options are wrong
