A parallel beam of light is incident on a face of a thin prism having an angle of prism equal to 6°. The angle of minimum deviation is measured to be 3° for this thin prism. What is the refractive index of the material of the thin prism?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2023 · Deviation and minimum deviation

Answer: (4) 1.5

Step-by-step solution

Given: a thin prism with A=6° and minimum deviation δₘ=3°.

Idea: for a thin prism both angles are small, and the general prism formula collapses to δₘ=(n-1)A.

3°=(n-1)× 6°

n-1=3/6=0.5

n=1.5

The full formula agrees: n=(sin ((A+δₘ)/2))/(sin (A/2))=(sin 4.5°)/(sin 3°)=1.50.
