Given: two thin lenses of focal lengths f₁ and f₂, in contact.
Idea: thin lenses in contact simply add their powers, P=P₁+P₂.
P=1/(f₁)+1/(f₂)
Putting the two terms over one denominator, P=(f₁+f₂)/(f₁f₂).
The equivalent focal length is the reciprocal of this, F=(f₁f₂)/(f₁+f₂) — the same two symbols the other way up, which is why the two are so easily swapped.
