A real object is placed at a distance f from the pole of a convex mirror, in front of the convex mirror. If the focal length of the mirror is f, then the distance of the image from the pole of the mirror is ________.

Asked in GUJCET 2009 · Mirror formula and magnification

Answer: (1) f/2

Step-by-step solution

Given: a convex mirror of focal length f, real object in front of it, so u=-f and the focus lies behind the mirror, f=+f.

Idea: put these into the mirror formula 1/v+1/u=1/f.

1/v=1/f-1/u=1/f+1/f=2/f

v=+f/2

The plus sign puts the image behind the mirror, so it is virtual and erect, and it stands f/2 from the pole.
