Asked in GUJCET 2013 · Nuclear radius and density
Idea: nuclear density is the same for every nucleus, because the mass goes as A and the volume, 4/3π R₀³A, goes as A too.
With R=R₀A^1/3, R₀=1.2 fm and a nucleon mass of 1.67×10⁻²⁷ kg: ρ=(3mₙ)/(4π R₀³)≈2.3×10¹⁷ kg m⁻³.
Water: ρ_w=10³ kg m⁻³.
Ratio: (2.3×10¹⁷)/(10³)=2.3×10¹⁴.
So nuclear matter is about 2.3×10¹⁴ times as dense as water — which is why a nucleus is thought of as a drop of extremely dense matter.
