Asked in GUJCET 2023 · Magnetic moment of magnets and loops
Given: a bar magnet of pole strength qₘ, length 2l and moment m=qₘ×2l, cut lengthwise into two equal halves.
Idea: pole strength is set by the area of the pole face and the magnetisation, qₘ=M_magA; the moment is pole strength times the distance between the poles.
A cut along the length keeps the length 2l and halves the cross-section, so each half has pole face A/2 and pole strength (qₘ)/2.
Moment of each half: m'=(qₘ)/2×2l=m/2.
Check: the two halves together carry m/2+m/2=m, as they must, since neither the magnetisation of the material nor its total volume has changed.
