A conducting wire of 1 m length is used to form a circular loop. If it carries a current of 1 ampere, its magnetic moment will be ______ A m².

Asked in GSEB Board July 2015 · Magnetic moment of loops and charges

Answer: (4) 1/(4π)

Step-by-step solution

Given: a wire 1 m long bent into a single circular loop carrying I=1 A.

Idea: the magnetic moment of a current loop is m=IA, where A is the area it encloses.

The whole wire becomes the circumference: 2π r=1, so r=1/(2π) m.

Area: A=π r²=π×1/(4π²)=1/(4π) m².

So m=1×1/(4π)=1/(4π) A m², about 0.08 A m².
