For a radiation of 6 GHz passing through air, the wave number (number of waves) per 1 m length is _______ (1 GHz=10⁹ Hz).

Asked in GSEB Board March 2019 · Wavelength, frequency and photon energy

Answer: (3) 20

Step-by-step solution

Given: u=6 GHz=6×10⁹ Hz, and in air c=3×10⁸ m s⁻¹.

Idea: the wave number here means how many whole waves lie in one metre, which is 1/λ.

λ=c/u=(3×10⁸)/(6×10⁹)=0.05 m.

1/λ=1/(0.05)=20.

So 20 waves lie in each metre.
