If μᵣ be relative permeability and K be the dielectric constant of a given medium then the refractive index of the medium is n= ________.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2016 · Refractive index and dielectric constant

Answer: (2) √μᵣ K

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the refractive index is the ratio of the two speeds, and each speed is fixed by the constants of its own medium.

In free space c=1/(√μ₀ε₀); in the medium v=1/(√με), with μ=μᵣμ₀ and ε=Kε₀.

Dividing, n=c/v=√(με)/(μ₀ε₀)=√μᵣ K.

For a non-magnetic medium μᵣ≈1 and this reduces to the familiar n=√K.
