A V–x graph for an electric field in the X-direction is shown in the figure. In which region is the magnitude of the electric field maximum?

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Relation between field and potential

Figure: Relation between field and potential
Answer: (3) Region C

Step-by-step solution

Idea: Eₓ = -(dV)/(dx), so the magnitude of the field is the steepness (slope) of the V–x graph, whatever the value of V itself.

Region A: V rises gently — a moderate slope.

Region B: V is constant — zero slope, so E = 0.

Region C: V drops sharply over a short distance — the steepest slope.

Region D: V rises steadily over a long stretch — a small slope.

So the field is strongest in region C (there it points along +x, since V falls as x increases).
