The N-pole of a bar magnet points towards a coil, and the magnet is moving away from the coil. The end of the coil facing the magnet ______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2022 · Direction of the induced current

Answer: (2) behaves as an S-pole only

Step-by-step solution

Idea: Lenz's law says the induced current opposes the change that produces it.

The N-pole is moving away, so the flux from the magnet through the coil is decreasing.

To oppose this, the coil must attract the receding N-pole back towards itself.

A face that attracts an N-pole is an S-pole (current clockwise as seen from the magnet).

So the near end of the coil behaves as an S-pole only.
