If a body contains n₁ protons and n₂ electrons, the total amount of charge on the body is ______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2021 · Properties of charge

Answer: (2) (n₁ - n₂)e

Step-by-step solution

Given: n₁ protons, each of charge +e; n₂ electrons, each of charge -e.

Idea: the net charge is the algebraic sum of all the charges (charge is additive, with sign).

Q = n₁(+e) + n₂(-e)

Q = (n₁ - n₂)e

If n₁ > n₂ the body is positive; if n₂ > n₁ it is negative.

So the total charge is (n₁ - n₂)e.

Why the other options are wrong
