The electric force acting between two point charges kept at a certain distance in vacuum is F. If the same two charges are kept at the same distance in a medium of dielectric constant K, the electric force between them is _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2016 · Coulomb's law and superposition

Answer: (4) F/K

Step-by-step solution

Given: force in vacuum F; the same charges at the same separation, now in a medium of dielectric constant K.

Idea: in a medium, the permittivity ε₀ in Coulomb's law is replaced by ε=Kε₀.

In vacuum: F=1/(4πε₀)(q₁q₂)/(r²)

In the medium: F'=1/(4π Kε₀)(q₁q₂)/(r²)=F/K

The molecules of the medium polarise and partly screen each charge from the other, which is why the force is reduced.

So the force in the medium is F/K.

Why the other options are wrong
