Given: a proton of charge e and mass m, and an α-particle of charge 2e and mass 4m, in the same uniform field E.
Idea: the electric force is F=qE, so a=(qE)/m - the acceleration follows the charge-to-mass ratio, not the charge or the mass alone.
aₚ=(eE)/m and a_α=(2eE)/(4m)=(eE)/(2m)
(aₚ)/(a_α)=(qₚ)/(q_α)×(m_α)/(mₚ)=1/2×4=2
The α-particle has twice the charge but four times the mass, so it accelerates half as fast: aₚ : a_α=2 : 1.
