Asked in GUJCET 2011 · Electric flux through a surface
Given: ⃗E=1 N C⁻¹ along Y; a square of side 1 m lying in the XY plane.
Idea: φ=EA cos θ, where θ is the angle between ⃗E and the normal to the surface.
The normal to a square in the XY plane is along Z.
⃗E is along Y, so θ=90° and cos θ=0.
φ=(1)(1)cos 90°=0
So no flux passes through the square: the field runs along it.
