The de Broglie wavelength of a ball of mass 120 g moving with a speed of 20 m s⁻¹ is ______.

Asked in GSEB Board August 2020 · de Broglie relation and its graphs

Answer: (2) 2.76×10⁻³⁴ m

Step-by-step solution

Given: m = 120 g = 0.12 kg, v = 20 m s⁻¹; take h = 6.63×10⁻³⁴ J s.

Idea: de Broglie wavelength λ = h/(mv).

mv = 0.12×20 = 2.4 kg m s⁻¹

λ = (6.63×10⁻³⁴)/(2.4) = 2.76×10⁻³⁴ m

So λ = 2.76×10⁻³⁴ m -- far too small to detect, which is why a ball shows no wave behaviour.

Why the other options are wrong
