Monochromatic light of frequency 6.0×10⁸ MHz is produced by a laser. The power emitted is 2×10⁻³ W. What is the energy of a photon in the light beam?

Asked in GSEB Board August 2020 · Photon energy, momentum and mass

Answer: (1) 3.98×10⁻¹⁹ J

Step-by-step solution

Given: f = 6.0×10⁸ MHz = 6.0×10¹⁴ Hz; take h = 6.63×10⁻³⁴ J s.

Idea: one photon carries E = hf. The power is not needed for this part.

E = 6.63×10⁻³⁴×6.0×10¹⁴

E = 3.98×10⁻¹⁹ J, which is about 2.49 eV.

(The power gives the photon rate: (2×10⁻³)/(3.98×10⁻¹⁹) ≈ 5.0×10¹⁵ photons per second.)

So each photon has energy 3.98×10⁻¹⁹ J.
