A device has power P at voltage V. The connecting wires from the power station to the device have a finite resistance R_C. The power dissipated in the connecting wires, P_C = ______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2021 · Heating and power in resistors

Answer: (3) (P²R_C)/(V²)

Step-by-step solution

Given: the device takes power P at voltage V; the connecting wires have resistance R_C.

Current drawn by the device: I = P/V. The same current flows through the connecting wires.

Power lost in the wires: P_C = I²R_C = (P/V)²R_C.

So P_C = (P²R_C)/(V²).

This is why power is transmitted at high voltage: for the same P, a larger V means a smaller current and much smaller losses in the wires.
