In an experiment, current flowing through a cell and potential difference across its terminals are measured and the following observation table is prepared. r is the internal resistance of the cell.
S.No.V (V)I (A)
11.00.08
20.50.18
30.80.12

What is the emf of the cell used in the experiment?

Asked in GUJCET 2013 · Terminal voltage and internal resistance

Answer: (2) 1.4 V

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the terminal voltage is V = ε - Ir, a straight line in I.

Rows 1 and 2: 1.0 = ε - 0.08 r and 0.5 = ε - 0.18 r.

Subtract: 0.5 = 0.10 r, so r = 5 Ω.

Then ε = 1.0 + 0.08×5 = 1.4 V.

Check with row 3: 1.4 - 0.12×5 = 0.8 V, as measured. So the emf is 1.4 V.
