The ratio of energies of the electron in the first excited state to its second excited state in a hydrogen atom is _____.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2015 · Energy levels and ionisation

Answer: (3) 9:4

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the ground state is n=1, so the first excited state is n=2 and the second excited state is n=3.

In the Bohr model Eₙ=-(13.6)/(n²) eV, so E∝1/(n²).

(E₂)/(E₃)=(1/2²)/(1/3²)=9/4.

Check with numbers: E₂=-3.4 eV and E₃=-1.51 eV, and (3.4)/(1.51)=2.25=9/4.

So the ratio is 9:4.
