A 44 mH inductor is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz ac supply. The rms value of the current in the circuit is ______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2023 · Reactance and frequency

Answer: (4) 15.9 A

Step-by-step solution

Given: L=44 mH=0.044 H, Vᵣₘₛ=220 V and f=50 Hz.

Idea: a pure inductor limits the current through its reactance X_L=2π fL, much as a resistor does through R.

X_L=2×3.14×50×0.044=13.8 Ω.

Iᵣₘₛ=(Vᵣₘₛ)/(X_L)=(220)/(13.8)≈15.9 A.

So the rms current is 15.9 A.
