In a series resonant circuit, the A.C. voltages across the resistance R, the inductor L and the capacitor C are 5 V, 10 V and 10 V respectively. The A.C. voltage applied to the circuit will be ______.

Asked in GUJCET 2009 · Current and voltage at resonance

Answer: (4) 5 V

Step-by-step solution

Given: V_R=5 V, V_L=10 V, V_C=10 V (rms values).

Idea: in a series circuit V_L leads the current by 90° and V_C lags it by 90°, so they point in opposite directions on the phasor diagram.

V=√V_R²+(V_L-V_C)²=√5²+(10-10)²=5 V.

At resonance the inductor and capacitor voltages cancel, and the whole supply voltage appears across R.

So the applied voltage is 5 V.

Why the other options are wrong
